Tim Johnson
Tim is a British mixing engineer specialising in cinematic music for film, television, and games. Working under the name Cinematic Mixing, he has become a trusted collaborator for composers seeking expansive, emotionally charged mixes that bridge orchestral, rock, ambient, and hybrid sound design.
Tim’s work has been featured across major international networks and streaming platforms including the BBC, Netflix, Amazon, and PBS. His documentary credits range from the light-hearted intimacy of the BBC’s Animals at Play to the epic orchestral scale of The Elephant & The Termite and Once Upon a Time in Tsavo, each showcasing his ability to capture every emotional nuance of a composer’s intention. A long-standing collaborator with Guy Michelmore, Tim continues to mix a wide range of his film and television scores, most recently producing the OST for the acclaimed animated series Badjelly. He also mixed the title theme for Christos Andreou’s documentary Pleiades and mastered Tim Verstegen’s score for Milou’s Struggle Continues, demonstrating his nuanced approach to emotionally charged and narrative-driven soundscapes.
A popular choice among production music composers, he has mixed hundreds of tracks for leading libraries such as Evolution Media Music, Motus Music, and Gothic Storm, and has mixed projects featuring renowned artists including Tina Guo, Julie Elven, Clara Sorace, Rusanda Panfili, and Mia Asano.
His credits include award-winning projects such as Break the Stars (Corporate Livewire Global and Platinum Vega Awards) and Frontier (Gold Vega Award), both composed by Michael Baugh, as well as the dark-fantasy audio drama Hearthfall: Rats in the Tower, winner of a Vega Award for Best Original Music.
Tim mixed Jo Quail’s double EP Macha & Invocation, described by The Razors Edge as “flawless demonstrations of enriching compositions, expertly bound together by Tim Johnson’s mix”. His commercial and media work also includes the NIO EC7 electric car campaign and countless indie films.
Whether shaping the intimacy of a solo performance or the scale of a 100-piece orchestra, Tim brings a refined, cinematic sensibility to every mix, balancing emotion, clarity, and impact with a detail-driven, cinematic approach.
Tim also holds the position of Head of Postgraduate Education at ThinkSpace Education, a UK institution specialising in audio for film, television, and games.
